Mel Fischer and the Employment Search

with one comment

I admit it!  I have been kind of down lately. After 11 months of looking and only 3 months of actual work, things can get very overwhelming sometimes. Its hard not to get discouraged. You wonder how you are going to pay the bills, the mortgage. You feel guilty because your wife is now the breadwinner of the house, and here you are, looking like mad for work, and not getting any results. There are days you want to throw your hands up….

Then I remembered the story of Mel Fischer. If you dont recall, Mel Fischer spent a good portion of his life and many thousands of dollars, searching for one thing, the Spanish Galleon Atocha. He persevered through financial loss and personal tragedy (he lost a son when one of his ships took on water and flipped over), yet he never gave up. Over 20 years he searched for that ship, knowing, just knowing that he would find the treasure one day. His favorite quote every morning was  “Todays the Day!” He said it every day right up until that fateful day in July 1985 when he found the treasure! He succeeded when so many told him to give up.

So what can I learn from this. Ive learned to treat each job search day as “Today’s the Day!”. If you put your mind in that mindset, then you can only help but feel good, even when things dont go your way, when the phone dosent ring, or when you get the 10th “thanks, but no thanks” email. A positive attitude can only be a benefit to your own mental health and of course to the comfort of your spouse or loved one who is obviously concerned for you. You learn to appreciate the little things in life, your friends, your health and the one who loves you. You keep your spirits up and realize that though money is important, people are MUCH more important. Of course you never stop trying to look for work, look for your treasure, but always keep in mind that the REAL treasure is the people that are around you everyday.

For my sake and for theirs, I will keep searching. After all “Todays the Day!!!”
